Practice: Spiritual Practices to Cultivate Loving Transcendence

Connect to the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of loving transcendence with these practices and make meaning of life's complexities.

To help deepen a connection to a loving source of transcendence, and reinforce belief systems that guide meaningful action, consider these practices:

  1. Gratitude Journaling: Write down three moments of connection, beauty, or love each day. Reflect on who or what you’re grateful to—and how this reflects your deeper beliefs.
  2. Loving-Kindness Meditation: Extend compassion to yourself, to loved ones, to strangers, and to all beings. Let your beliefs in the dignity and worth of others fuel this practice.
  3. Reflective Prayer or Meditation: Contemplate how divine love or your spiritual tradition’s core values anchor you. Ask, “What do I believe about the world, and how does that guide how I live?”
  4. Narrative Storytelling: Share stories with family or friends about moments of spiritual insight, moral courage, or experiences of love. These stories shape identity and reinforce shared beliefs.
  5. Embodied Rituals: Engage in spiritual practices (like singing, communion, sabbath, pilgrimage, or sacred reading) that are rooted in a loving theology. Let your body reinforce your beliefs.

Thriving occurs through beliefs that point us toward meaning beyond the self and is reinforced through compassion, purpose, and loving relationships. When people experience transcendence as loving—and believe that love is ultimate—they are more likely to live generously, endure hardship with hope, and build communities marked by grace and justice. Humans need practices of connection and beliefs that anchor us in love, shape our stories, and sustain our pursuit of a life that matters.
